If you feel like you are constantly starting over with your health goals, it can feel discouraging.
You start motivated, make changes, and then somewhere along the way, it falls apart.
This is often labeled as a lack of discipline.
In reality, it is usually a strategy problem.

Why Extreme Changes Do Not Work
Many people approach their health with an all-or-nothing mindset.
They try to:
Cut out entire food groups
Drastically reduce calories
Follow rigid plans that do not fit their lifestyle
While this can work short term, it is usually not sustainable.
Research in behavior change consistently shows that smaller, manageable habits are more likely to stick long term (Lally et al., 2010).
The Brain and Habit Formation
Your brain is wired to conserve energy and avoid overwhelm.
When changes feel too big or restrictive, your brain perceives them as a threat.
This leads to:
Resistance
Inconsistency
Eventually stopping altogether
Habits that feel manageable are more likely to become automatic over time.
What Actually Creates Lasting Change
Sustainable change is built on consistency, not perfection.
Instead of focusing on doing everything at once, focus on:
One or two small habit changes
Repeating them consistently
Building gradually over time
Examples of Sustainable Changes
Adding protein to breakfast
Going for a short walk after meals
Increasing water intake
Improving sleep by 30 minutes
These may seem simple, but they create meaningful changes over time.
A Better Approach
If you have struggled to stay consistent, it may not be about trying harder.
It may be about simplifying your approach.
The goal is not perfection. It is consistency.
